About the NHDS program
Innovative technology to improve natural hazard detection
Real-time flood monitoring units deployed under the NSW Government Natural Hazards Detection System (NHDS) Program to improve early warning capability and emergency response.
The program supports the development and large-scale trial of technologies that:
Improve early identification of natural hazards
Help emergency services prioritise areas of highest risk
Deliver reliable data to support disaster planning
Flood Monitoring in Shoalhaven & Clarence Valley
As part of Phase 2 of the NHDS Program, large-scale pilot trials are being conducted across two local government areas:
-
Shoalhaven City Council
-
Clarence Valley Council
These 12-month pilots test flood detection technology in live field conditions, delivering critical water level data to government agencies and emergency services.
The goal is simple – better flood visibility, earlier warnings, stronger response.
Flood monitoring units
Flood monitoring radar units are installed in critical locations to detect rising water levels.
Earlier warnings. Better decisions. Safer communities.
Flood events can escalate quickly. Traditional monitoring often relies on manual checks, delayed reporting or limited site coverage.
The NHDS flood monitoring deployments provide:
-
Continuous water level tracking
-
Near-time alerts when thresholds are exceeded
-
Trend visibility across rising conditions
-
Data to support emergency response coordination
This improves situational awareness during storm events and supports longer-term flood mitigation planning.
Radar-based water level monitoring built for extreme conditions
The NHDS flood pilot uses Kallipr’s radar-based water level monitoring technology, purpose-built for harsh field environments.
The solution includes:
- High-accuracy radar sensors measure water height without contact, reducing fouling and maintenance issues.
- Data is transmitted via Cat-M1 or NB-IoT networks using internal or external antennas to maintain signal, even in remote or high-risk areas.
- IP68-rated enclosures designed to withstand flooding, debris, impact and prolonged exposure.
- Mounted to bridges, culverts, drainage channels and flood markers with minimal disruption.
Data can be viewed in Kallipr Kloud or integrated into SCADA and emergency management systems.
